We asked, Isabel shared. Enjoy her insight on the creative community and a note of encouragement to new artists/people looking to break into Charleston’s creative scene.
Have you always lived in Charleston?
I’ve been here for about 8 years now, but I’m originally from Argentina. I also lived in Berlin and New York before settling down here.
Does living in Charleston suit your creative lifestyle?
Yes! The artistic community is just so supportive here, and that’s such a big part of doing something creative. Being so close to the water in such a beautiful place is also very inspiring.
Have you always been making art?
Yes, I think at different times in my life it was more prevalent, and other times less. Both my parents were involved in the art community in Argentina, and they always encouraged me in a really positive way.
Our biggest takeaway: MAKE. Whatever it is, continue to create and share. This is what sparks connection and conversation.
Who were you in a past life?
We’ve talked about alternative paths that I have taken (laughter), and I always feel that I have been drawn to the healing arts. I would like to think that I was a healer in a past life…
What mediums are you currently working with or would like to work with more?
Well… paper of course (laughter)… However, lately I have been working with Sumi-e techniques, exploring something more abstract, and perhaps I’ll start incorporating words as well.
Any words of advice to young artists or people new to the art scene in Charleston?
First… share, make and go experience art.
There are galleries like Tim’s place at Hed Hi and some other pop ups you should explore. And I think it’s really important to not stay in your lane…
