We recently got together to chat about the great and challenging parts of owning your own business, working as a creative, and investing in the community around you.
What was the process of opening until now?
Well I started at Trident Tech and was there for about six years to get an associates degree that normally takes two years! (laughs) I had some friends who were photographers who were also in bands and I started taking photos of them.
How do you balance personal work and client work?
I believe you can still be an artist and do commercial work. Someone can hire me because they like my art and I get paid for a project (taking care of myself) and then I can just go out and make my art. For me it’s all connected.
Our biggest takeaway: TIME. It took 15 years for Silver Hill to become what it is today…ends!
How do you create a vision for your images?
I always want to create something that’s never existed before and will never exist again.
How did Silver Hill Studios begin?
About 15 years ago I was just basically tired of working out of my bedroom. We eventually built a studio in the Silver Hill neighborhood and started having art shows and music shows and we tried to make it affordable for local artists. After renting spaces for years, I really wanted to own my own space and we worked with a bank that allowed us to take on debt and that allowed me and my partners to do whatever we wanted and that’s kind of Silver Hill in a nutshell today.
